zPLC from Zap, is a smart technology that turns electrical wiring into a communication network. It allows devices like lights and appliances to connect and communicate by sending IP data through power sockets.
zPLC is a fundamental technology to Networking Lighting Controls because it resolves connectivity issues at a minimal per-fixture cost.
It is estimated that annually there will be over 5 billion dollars worth of utility rebates available for NLC projects as of January 2024.
Reducing wireless nodes from a wireless/BT mesh network, is the equivalent to removing cars from the highway during rush hour. Since there's less congestion, there's less accidents and problems.
One of wireless NLC's biggest challenges is dealing with devices mysteriously dropping from the network. Traditionally, an electrician would need to be dispatched to service the problem. With zPLC, fixtures can now be reset and recommissioned remotely, saving valuable time and costs.
Traditional PLC technology required insolated and grounded power lines to transmit data effectively, which was cost prohibitive for adoption. zPLC's patented technology works reliably with or without insolated or grounded power lines.
Simplicity means technology works better
The zPLC network hub receives data via wired protocols such as zPLC, PoE, DALI and more or wireless protocols such as Bluetooth, Zigbee and Wi-Fi or others, and dispatches data packets to the connected device(s) through the power line connection and zPLC protocol.
Each fixture/device will need a node to receive and decrypt data from the hub. Nodes are built directly as a component of the fixture driver. Nodes automatically commission when connected to a power line with the ZapHUB installed.
zPLC devices can be controlled through a mobile app or web page that lists a users registered products and directs users to the manufacturers product control panel.
(Premiering November 2025)
I've worked with several wireless NLC providers and they all have connectivity issues. Fixtures lose connection and then re-commissioning it is nearly impossible!

Impressed! If Zap allows us to do our job quick without having to train everyone to become software engineer, then it's way easier for us and cheaper for the end-user. Connect, go and done. The demo looked great!

R** Energy
End-users want to flick a switch and see light. NLC is great for energy efficiency but it increases the cost to the end-user which makes NLC adoption prohibitive. Zap's simple business model makes integration into our existing product line pretty seamless.

S******'s Electrical
We started investigating the Network Lighting Controls market because utility companies announced to everyone in the lighting industry that NLC was the next stage of lighting energy conservation and that they would be supporting the transition with billions in rebates.
Our initial inklings were to use a Bluetooth mesh technology to connect the lighting fixtures but quickly realized that the mesh network would become unstable due to the sheer number of nodes on the network. After thorough debates, we decided on PLC technology because we knew it was not realistic to expect every company to retrain their electricians to become software technicians.
Since 2020 utility companies have offered over 5 billion dollars in rebates for facilities to adopt Network Lighting Controls but market penetration was still limited due to the high costs of purchasing, installing, and maintaining NLC equipment.
zPLC is a breakthrough technology because it allows data to be transmitted over single wired powerlines, even if it’s non-insulated. zPLC is a stable and mature technology that lowers the product, installation, and maintenance costs which will allow mass market adoption.
For mass adoption of Network Lighting Controls (NLC) must overcome 5 obstacles :
Expensive hardware costs
Complex installation requirements
Reliable connectivity and data transmission
High maintenance costs
Compatibility to existing wiring conditions
